Everyone knows that betting on cricket will reach hysterical levels once the 'historical' cricket series between India and Pakistan begins . But there's a large section of punters who are betting that the Indian cricket team will be back before the scheduled tour is completed.

Secondly , a couple of good wins by the Indian team could inspire crowd or spectator violence. BCCI president Dalmia has already stated that any violence could lead to an immediate withdrawal of the Indian cricket team.The Mumbai bookies have therefore fixed the odds at Rs.15 on every rupee.. In other words, if you bet one rupee on the premature withdrawal of the Indian team from Pakistan, you will get Rs.15 plus one rupee or Rs.16 from the bookie. Punters who like taking risks have already bet around Rs.200 crores on such a happening.

What is significant in Mumbai is the total absence of bookies. Fearing arrest under MOCOCA , they have shifted to the relatively safer environs of nearby Panvel, Lonavala and Khandala. Here too, they have not installed any base of operations with MTNL landline phones.. Instead, their modus operandi will be to keep travelling in vehicles and use mobile phones for communication. The headquarters for supervising this mega crore operations has also shifted to Jaipur and Delhi , according to a top police officer.

The volume of betting on the one-day series is expected to cross Rs.15,000 crores---more than the ONGC offer to the public.The combined volume of the test series and one-dayers will cross Rs.25,000 crores which bookies claim is the equivalent to the volume of betting during the World Cup series.

At the moment, the fate of the first one-dayer beginning on March 13 is tilted in Pakistan's favour. The bookies are extremely realistice while calculating the odds and feel that the fact that the Pakistanis would be playing on home soil and that one of the officiating umpires will be local in origin. And so they have fixed the odds at 80 paise for Pakistan( if you predict right,you will get Rs1.80 ) and Rs.1.15 on India winning.(the winner gets Rs.2.15).

Sachin tendulkar's peformance will be closely watched. If he makes a 100, the punter will make Rs.10.50 on every rupee that he had bet. Or, if Sachin smashes a quick 50, the punter makes a fast Rs.2.35 on every rupee. So everyone Sachin bettor is praying that he quickly recovers from a sprained back.

Similarly, the odds on Saurav Ganguly are Rs.12( on completing 100 runs) and Rs.1.80(for a fifty). Sehwag's odds are Rs.12 and Rs.1.60; Rahul Dravid is at Rs.13 and Rs.1.75 adn V.V.S.Laxman is at Rs.14 and Rs.2.25.

There are also bets being made on India amassing 1000 runs in the five one-dayers.You will make six paise on a rupee. A prediction of 1100 runs earns Rs.1.16 while 1200 will earn Rs.33.Of course, if India does not reach these targets, you will loose your rupee.

The policemen in charge of keeping tabs on this large-scale operation do not want to be named. Why? It is underworld dominated they say and indicate that there are six bookies who are either affiliated to Dawood Ibrahim or Chotta Rajan. There are another 600-odd small timers with their specific client lists but they too are hooked up with the big six. So wait for March 13. Most mobiles will be working overtime, at least in Mumbai and Delhi.
