Peak Entertainment's Caribbean Sun Poker
Ads `Too Provocative' For Gambling Publication
Card Player Magazine Rejects Ads For Being Too Racy
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2004--Gambling magazines
are sometimes sold as discreetly as pornography. The covers hidden
from children's eyes by plastic sheets designed to hide breasts
and the tops of thighs. So when one of the most-read publications
in the industry rejected ads for Peak Entertainment's Caribbean
Sun Poker (caribbeansunpoker.com), one could assume there must have
been something highly offensive in the ads.
"We're using face cards in our campaign for Caribbean Sun
Poker. They talk to each other, using double-entendres," said
Johnny Jordane, Peak's Director of Promotions, which enforce the
campaign's tagline: `It's hotter here'.
"We were really surprised at the rejections. The illustrations
we used in the ads were prominent design features of CaribbeanSunPoker.com.
We weren't showing anything violent nor were we showing nude images
or anything distasteful," Jordane added.
However, Peak was asked to change the headlines and now run `tamer'
ads in Card Player. The original ads were accepted without incident
and are running in other publications, like Poker Europa, Southern
California Gaming, and Canadian Poker Player.
Peak Entertainment's online poker room, Caribbean Sun Poker (caribbeansunpoker.com)
has attracted a lot of players and attention since its launch just
over two years ago. "When the ads got rejected, we were actually
reassured that our campaign worked. Advertising that doesn't get
any attention isn't really doing its job," said Jordane.
